Clarification needed on fare increase

Dear Editor,

The recent announcement regarding the approved fare increase for the transport sector has created some public confusion and requires clarification from the relevant authorities.

It is understood that Parliament approved a 16 per cent increase in transport fares, to be implemented in two phases: an eight per cent increase effective June 1 and a further eight per cent increase scheduled for July.

The key question is whether the second eight per cent increase will be calculated based on the original fare structure or on the already adjusted fare following the first increase.

This distinction is important. If the second increase is applied to the new, higher fare, the overall increase will exceed 16 per cent due to compounding. However, if both increases are calculated from the original fare, the total increase will remain consistent with the approved 16 per cent.

While the difference may appear minor at first glance, transportation is a recurring expense. Commuters — including workers, students and business operators — incur these costs daily. Even small increases, when multiplied across multiple trips over time, can place a noticeable strain on household budgets.

This issue appears to be one of communication rather than policy. A clear statement outlining how the second phase will be calculated would help eliminate uncertainty and prevent misunderstanding among commuters and transport operators.

Public confidence is strengthened when significant economic decisions are communicated with precision, particularly when they directly affect the cost of living.
