Michael Abrahams | Jamaica deserves a better Opposition
Michael Abrahams is correct that Jamaica deserves a strong, responsible Opposition, because effective governance requires serious scrutiny and credible alternatives. But responsibility cannot suddenly become convenient when some opposition figures and associates have themselves used rhetoric or conduct that critics could reasonably regard as disrespectful, inflammatory, or inconsistent with the standards they now demand from others. Accountability must work both ways. An Opposition cannot condemn poor political behaviour from the Government while excusing questionable behaviour within its own ranks. Jamaica needs an Opposition that challenges the Government vigorously without encouraging lawlessness, undermining respect for institutions, or reducing national issues to personal attacks; including disrespect toward the office of the prime minister. If the Opposition wants Jamaicans to view it as a credible government-in-waiting, then discipline, consistency, respect for the rule of law and responsible leadership must begin within its own house. - Isaac Onywere

Zero changes. Not even a leadership challenge, no calls for Golding to resign, nothing. A first-time MP is their biggest spokesperson. Nothing but dysfunction. - @Mario_Don_

Often when an Opposition opposes, people ask themselves one question in the back of their minds: could you do better if you were in office? So, what u say could right from now til next year, if people don’t feel you can do better, you won’t win the election. Great article. - Mitsy Mullings
Many of us in the diaspora are concerned with the ineffective job the opposition party have been doing to hold the government accountable. For democracy to be effective, good governance requires opposition party to put check on the Government. - Stan Evan Smith
