Purchasing empty houses not a viable option

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing in response to the Letter of the Day ‘Housing should be treated as a national emergency’, published on October 9.

Both the United Kingdom and Jamaica face significant housing crises. Yet, they often do not treat housing as a national emergency because of political priorities, economic constraints, and a lack of comprehensive policy frameworks.

The United Kingdom and Jamaica do not impose bans on foreign buyers in order to encourage investment and stimulate economic growth. Such restrictions could deter foreign capital, which is vital for housing development and overall market stability.

It is obvious why the Government of Jamaica would not invest in the other proposals, such as compulsorily purchasing empty houses.
