IDT blocks tanker drivers from taking industrial action

The Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) has stepped in to prevent tanker drivers represented by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Association, an affiliate of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees, from taking industrial action.

In the order, seen by The Gleaner, the IDT noted that it is satisfied that industrial action has begun in contemplation or to further an existing industrial dispute.

The tribunal said the Ministry of Labour and Social Security had referred the matter to it for settlement.

On Sunday night, there were rumblings that trouble could be brewing in the sector, with reports emerging that tanker drivers were contemplating strike action.

However, in a social media post on X, Energy and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz dismissed the reports, labelling them as irresponsible, while insisting that he was not aware of any plan for industrial or disruptive action in the transport sector at this time.

The IDT says any such industrial action which has begun in contemplation or furtherance of the industrial dispute must cease with immediate effect, and workers must report to work according to their respective shifts on Tuesday.
