The Best of the Best tennis tournament serves off on Thursday at 8 a.m. at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre, but the defending champions will be conspicuously absence when the first balls are struck.
Mt Alvernia High, winners of the Division One Girls title at last year’s tournament, have been forced to withdraw from the competition due to financial constraints in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
The school, still grappling with the aftermath of the devastating storm, cited insurmountable costs associated with travel and accommodation as the primary reason for its non-participation.
The absence of the Montego Bay-based school means tennis enthusiasts will be deprived of watching talented junior sensation Jade Fearon in action.
The young star, who holds national championship titles in both the under-16 and under-18 categories, would have been among the favourites to dominate the girls’ competition.
Mt Alvernia’s withdrawal is compounded by the absence of two other prominent western Jamaica schools, Montego Bay High and Cornwall College, leaving significant gaps in the draw.
“We’re disappointed not to be there, but circumstances beyond our control have made it impossible,” a Mt Alvernia representative said.
“We’ll be cheering from the sidelines, and looking forward to next year’s tournament.”
While the absence of these powerhouse programmes undoubtedly diminishes the field, tournament organisers can still boast participation from 32 clubs and schools across the island.
The withdrawal of title contenders has, however, blown the competition wide open, presenting opportunities for emerging talents to make their mark on the national stage.
Perennial contenders Immaculate, along with Wolmer’s Boys’ and Girls’, Campion College, Hillel, and Ardenne, are expected to make their mark this year.
