Kingsmen fall to third-straight defeat

The Jamaica Kingsmen, looking for redemption after a disastrous start to their debut Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign, got no relief from the Guyana Amazon Warriors at Sabina Park tonight.

The game ended after 14.1 overs of the Amazon Warriors' innings, with the visitors cruising to a six-wicket victory after dismantling the hosts with the ball.

Sent in to bat for the first time in three games, the Kingsmen were woeful with the bat.

Reeza Hendricks was solid at the top of the innings with 40 off 32 deliveries, but only captain Rovman Powell, batting at number four, offered meaningful support with 24 from 17 balls.

Kirk McKenzie, with 16 from 14 deliveries, and young Vitel Lawes, who made 14 off 11 balls, got starts as the Kingsmen were skittled out for 117 in 19.4 overs.

Mohammad Nabi, with 4-22 from four overs, was the pick of the Amazon Warriors bowlers. He was well supported by captain Imran Tahir, who took 2-26 from four overs. Shamar Joseph, despite conceding 22 runs in 2.4 overs, also claimed two wickets, while Khary Pierre was miserly, leaking just 17 runs from his four overs while taking one wicket. Glenn Phillips also chipped in with 1-5.

Phillips then returned to give the Amazon Warriors a brisk start, scoring 28 from 17 deliveries, although he lost opening partner Mavendra Dindyal for nought.

He quickly found a capable partner in Shai Hope, who struck an unbeaten 56 from 41 deliveries to guide his team comfortably over the line.

Shimron Hetmyer was dismissed by Andre Russell after Phillips departed, caught by Keemo Paul for one with the score at 45-3, but the Amazon Warriors still had plenty of overs in hand.

By the time the next wicket fell, the contest was effectively over. Nabi blasted 19 runs, leaving little doubt about the result, with the visitors on 96 and eight overs still remaining.

The hard-hitting Quentin Sampson then scored 13 from nine deliveries to finish the job as the Amazon Warriors closed on 118-4.

The result leaves the Kingsmen firmly rooted to the bottom of the seven-team table without a win after suffering a one-run defeat to the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons last Friday and a five-run heartbreaker against the Barbados Tridents on Tuesday.

The Kingsmen will now turn their attention to the Trinbago Knight Riders at Sabina Park on Saturday.
