Jamaica international Drew Spence has etched her name into Women’s Super League (WSL) history after becoming the competition’s all-time appearance leader.
The Tottenham Hotspur captain made her 217th WSL appearance in yesterday’s 4-1 victory over Birmingham City, surpassing the previous record held by former Chelsea defender Millie Bright.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who switched her international allegiance from England to Jamaica in 2021, reached the milestone after a career spanning more than a decade in England’s top flight. After spending 14 years at Chelsea, she joined Tottenham in 2022 and has remained a key figure for the North London club.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Spence reflected on the achievement and the journey that led to it.
“I’ve been around for a while! I’m incredibly proud to be able to do that and it’s not just a proud moment for me, but also for my family,” she said.
“It’s [about] all the hard work that I put in throughout the years. When you’re younger, you don’t really think about these types of accolades. It was all about winning trophies. Now it’s happened, it’s such a massive part of my career and something that I can be proud of to look back on.”
Spence said the record also reflects the sacrifices required to maintain longevity at the highest level.
“I know the sacrifices — looking after yourself and making sure that you’re available all the time. I know how hard it is to keep that motivation for so many seasons.”
The Jamaican midfielder continues to perform at an elite level and believes she is enjoying some of the best physical conditioning of her career.
“I feel like I’m probably in the best shape that I’ve ever been. I’m recovering quicker, I understand my body a lot more and the nutrition side of things has helped me,” Spence told BBC Sport.
Former Chelsea teammate Erin Cuthbert praised Spence’s consistency and professionalism, describing her as “an absolute warrior” and a player who “certainly deserves all the plaudits” for her longevity.
Already a five-time league champion and four-time FA Cup winner, Spence’s latest milestone further strengthens her status as one of the most durable and respected players in Women’s Super League history, while providing another proud moment for Jamaican football on the international stage.
