PAC moves to compel testimony from UHWI CEO Fitzgerald Mitchell

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) voted unanimously on Tuesday to invoke Parliament's legal powers to compel University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) CEO Fitzgerald Mitchell's attendance, a step that carries potential criminal sanctions if disobeyed. His immediate predecessor as CEO, Kevin Allen, was also ordered to appear for a June 2 meeting.

Approximately 2,000 Jamaicans are still without electricity six months after Hurricane Melissa caused widespread power outages across the island, with Energy Minister Daryl Vaz indicating that the majority of affected households are in Westmoreland, where the storm made landfall. Vaz shared the update in Parliament on Tuesday, citing a report from the Jamaica Public Service Company, which showed that electricity restoration across the island has reached 99.71 per cent.

JTA: Graduate Allowance dispute resolved, further wage talks to continue

SIX MONTHS IN THE DARK

WESTERN BUREAU: Six months after the devastation of Hurricane Melissa, residents of the small coastal community of Parottee in St Elizabeth say their most urgent needs are the restoration of electricity and access to water, as recovery continues at a slow pace. “We have a big issue here with water and light, but water is our main issue, and water is life,” said Sandra Linton-Jones, a 62-year-old fish vendor who sells at the Black River Fish Market.

One step at a time

Western Jamaica’s sporting facilities are steadily coming back to life six months after the passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 2025 with key venues pushing towards reopening. The Montego Bay Sports Complex, Jarrett Park, and Wespow Park were some of the facilities ravaged, negatively impacting sports in the region. Yoni Epstein, lease owners of the Montego Bay Sports Complex and chairman of Montego Bay United (MBU), told The Gleaner his club is prioritising a return to Catherine Hall next season, with significant work already underway.

Kizzy Don turns to ‘Therapy’ after baby loss

Months after the tragic loss of her newborn baby girl, Miracle, emerging dancehall artiste Kizzy Don is planning to have another baby with her partner, fellow dancehall artiste Kiprich. She believes that having another baby may help to speed up her healing process. “I am not going to truly heal until I get back another child. I feel like a part of me missing still because mi don’t have the baby. So, anytime I get back a baby, I feel like I can try to look past things. I will feel better about the situation ... I just want back a child,” Kizzy Don said.
