5 Questions With Dexta Daps

Few dancehall artistes have cultivated a fan base quite like Dexta Daps. Blending soulful melodies with raw emotion and commanding performances, the entertainer has carved out a distinctive space in the genre, earning a loyal following while remaining true to the sound and authenticity that first set him apart.

Dexta Daps, whose real name is Louis Grandison, launched his music career in 2012 with the release of his first two singles, Save Me Jah and May You Be. He began gaining wider recognition in 2014 with hits such as Morning Love and Jealous Ova, featuring Tifa.

Building on that momentum, Dexta Daps reached new heights in 2015 with the release of Shabba Madda Pot. Over the years, he has collaborated with several international and regional artistes, including Kranium, Masicka, Mavado, M.I.A., Davido, Kiesza and Tory Lanez.

Ahead of his return to the Dream Weekend stage on August 1 for Daydreams in Montego Bay, 5 Questions With... catches up with Dexta Daps as he reflects on the principles that have shaped his career, the evolution of his music, the legacy he hopes to leave behind, and what fans can expect from his performance and future projects.

Your career has remained relevant through changing eras of dancehall. What’s been the key to that longevity?

Staying true to the vibe that started my career and keeping the music honest and relatable. I evolve with the production sounds because music is always changing, but I don’t chase trends. At the end of the day, it’s about creating solid melodies, real emotion and delivering performances that genuinely connect with people. I think authenticity is what has kept my supporters with me over the years.

How has your approach to making music evolved over the years?

It’s ever-evolving. As an artiste, you’re constantly learning and finding new ways to express yourself. I’ve continued to sharpen my sense of arrangement and storytelling while making sure I balance those intimate, soulful moments with the energy that dancehall fans expect. Every project teaches me something new, and I try to bring that growth into the next one.

I f fans only remembered one thing about your career years from now, what would you want it to be?

I’d want people to remember that I gave them real, heartfelt music that resonated beyond the dance songs. I always wanted the music to feel honest and for the performances to leave a lasting impression. If people can look back and say my songs helped them through different moments in life, then that’s something I’ll always be proud of.

Dream Weekend has become one of the Caribbean’s biggest entertainment events. What does it mean to be part of this year’s line-up?

It’s always a privilege to be part of Dream Weekend and to share the stage with so much talent. Dream has become one of the biggest summer celebrations, so being included in the line-up means a lot. It’s an opportunity to represent the culture well, connect with the fans, and bring the kind of energy they come expecting. I never take that opportunity for granted.

Are there any surprises you’re planning for your set?

(Laughs) There are always a few surprises, but I can’t reveal them because then they wouldn’t be surprises. I will say that fans can expect plenty of energy and a performance that they’ll remember. The goal is always to give people an experience, not just a show.

What’s next for Dexta Daps after the summer?

Right now, the focus is on creating more music, finishing work on my upcoming album and continuing to tour. I’m excited about what’s ahead, and I’m looking forward to sharing that next chapter with my fans.
