The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising that the main road from Green Island to Glasgow in Hanover is now closed.
The agency says the corridor has been closed in the vicinity of the Apostolic Church in the community of Kendal, due to collapse of the road embankment.
Community Relations Officer at the NWA, Janel Ricketts, says that heavy overnight rains on Thursday resulted in the road embankment failing.
She says motor vehicles cannot navigate the space through Kendal.
Ricketts says that a team from the NWA is now conducting the necessary damage assessment.
She is advising that in the interim, motorists travelling from the direction of Green Island and wishing to go beyond the affected section of road in Kendal are being advised to use the alternative route through Riley, Kingsvale and Prospect.
Motorists are also being advised to obey the posted warning signs and not to attempt to use the affected section of road.
