Playing time the main reason for Richards’ Wimbledon move

Phoenix Sports Management CEO Craig Butler says Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards’ season-long loan move from English Premier League (EPL) club Chelsea to League One outfit AFC Wimbledon was the best available option to secure regular playing time for the Jamaican prodigy.

Richards joined Chelsea in January 2024 and featured for the club’s under-18 and under-21 teams.

During his first season at the club, he suffered a serious knee injury just a few months into his Chelsea career and spent the remainder of the campaign on the sidelines.

He returned to action last season and produced some encouraging performances with the under-21s before going on loan to Championship side Leicester City.

Although he saw some game time, the move did not work out as hoped, and Richards returned to Chelsea with uncertainty surrounding his immediate future during the off-season.

Despite interest from a number of clubs in England and across Europe, Butler said securing regular minutes was the most important factor at this stage of the player’s development.

“It just an opportunity for him to play first-team football. That’s the most important priority and why we put him in that club. That was the club willing to give him the opportunity and therefore, we have to put him where he can play. So he can play and start rebuilding himself,” Butler told The Gleaner.

“Wimbledon is in England. It’s an opportunity for him to play first-team football. It’s the opportunity that we got, and it’s important to understand that ‘Whisper’ is coming off knee surgery. And coming back from that, we have to take the best opportunity that will give him the playing time, so he can show his quality.

“It may take a one-year step to show who he is at Wimbledon and then he can move forward, but that is the job of any manager, to get the best opportunity for him, and that’s what we have done.”

Butler said Richards is relishing the opportunity to prove himself at this level and expects him to perform well this season.

“He has had a couple injuries and he is coming back from them. So we need him to get a chance to play and start operating in a professional and focus manner.

“He didn’t get much playing time at Leicester last year because Leicester were facing relegation, and therefore the coach who they brought in wanted to use more senior players at the time, and that affected Whisper, but at the same time he got an opportunity. He got a little bit of playing time there. He was coming off the injury, so I am looking forward to him performing well this season,” he added.
