Denbigh High School continued their giant-killing run in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition yesterday, defeating Kemps Hill 3-1 at the Wembley Centre of Excellence to book their place in the round of 16.
In the must-win Group Three encounter, Denbigh produced an impressive performance to finish level on points with Kemps Hill, who topped the group on goal difference.
Denbigh entered the crucial encounter without ace goalkeeper Kevin Price, who was red-carded in their previous game against St Mary High on Saturday.
However, captain Kenardo Smith stepped into the goalkeeping role and performed admirably to help secure qualification. Defenders Tayo Croos and Javaughn Campbell were also outstanding at the back for Denbigh.
The victory was spearheaded by centre-forward Lashawn Barnaby, who delivered his best performance of the season with a brace.
Barnaby opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute before adding his second in the 68th.
Markland Williams, who provided the assist for Barnaby's second goal, added his name to the scoresheet in the 82nd minute to put Denbigh firmly in control.
Jordan Falconer scored a consolation goal for Kemps Hill in the fifth minute of added time.
In other matches in the group, Mile Gully edged Garvey Maceo 3-2, while St Mary High and Knox played to a goalless draw.
Denbigh coach Garfield Carney praised his players for their resilience and fighting spirit in a match they needed to win to keep their season alive.
“The boys were resilient today, as it was a must-win game for us, and they came out and showed a lot of fight. We are now in the round of 16, and thanks to the school community for their support,” Carney said.
