Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness, emphasises a point while making his contribution to the 2026/27 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on March 19.

The first 300 semi-permanent housing units for families who lost their homes during the passage of Hurricane Melissa are on the island and are being cleared for distribution.

Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness, made the disclosure during his contribution to the 2026/27 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on March 19.

He noted that 2,500 semi-permanent housing solutions have been procured by the NHT at a cost of US$19 million.

Deployment of the units is part of initiatives being implemented by the Government, under the umbrella of the Shelter Recovery Programme (SRP).

Through the initiative, the NHT is expected to procure a total of 5,000 semi-permanent houses for distribution to address urgent housing needs, following Hurricane Melissa.

The units comprise two-bedroom modules of approximately 400 square feet, complete with bathroom, kitchen and living area. Each unit comes with windows for ventilation, two metal doors, and pre-wiring that allows for easy electrical installation with minimal additional work.

Another aspect of the SRP focuses on Government-led repair efforts, being undertaken by members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), in collaboration with external international teams.
