A 33-year-old man has been charged in connection with the murder of 62-year-old farmer Clement Mills and the injury of Mills’ wife during a gun attack in St Catherine earlier this month.
The accused, Jamie Stephenson, otherwise called ‘Tutu’, of Mansfield Heights, Ocho Rios, St Ann, has been charged with murder, possession of a prohibited weapon, wounding with intent, unauthorised possession of ammunition, and using a firearm to commit a felony.
It is alleged that about 11 a.m. on Friday, May 15, Mills and his wife were travelling in a 2005 Toyota Lite-Ace van loaded with water they had collected in Lluidas Vale, when a man emerged from bushes along the roadway heading towards Point Hill and opened fire on the vehicle.
Police say Mills and his wife were both struck, and the vehicle crashed along the roadway.
The couple was assisted to Linstead Hospital, where Mills was pronounced dead and his wife admitted for treatment.
Investigators from the Spanish Town Criminal Investigation Branch launched a probe, which led to Stephenson’s arrest about four hours after the incident. An illegal firearm was allegedly seized.
Police say Stephenson was later identified on an identification parade on Monday and was charged following a question-and-answer session in the presence of his attorney on Wednesday.
He is awaiting a court date.
