‘He represented the very best’, says PAJ in tribute to veteran broadcaster Dervan Malcolm

The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) says the passing of veteran broadcaster and journalist Dervan Malcolm is a significant loss to Jamaican journalism.

Malcolm died on Thursday following a period of illness.

Malcolm was a respected and influential voice in Jamaican broadcasting, with a career spanning more than three decades.

He dedicated 31 years to the Independent Radio Company, where he built a reputation as a consummate professional, trusted journalist and advocate for public education and national development.

Malcolm began his broadcasting career on October 24, 1993, while he was still a student and Head Boy at Calabar High School.

He quickly distinguished himself through his talent, discipline, and commitment to excellence.

His entry into broadcasting was influenced by his success in the performing arts, including his participation in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Festival of the Performing Arts.

Throughout his career, Malcolm served in several key roles, including news presenter and editor, sportscaster, talk-show producer and Executive Producer of Programmes.

In 2007, he launched and hosted Both Sides of the Story on Power 106 FM, a programme which became synonymous with informed and balanced public discourse.

Through the programme, Malcolm sought to educate, empower and enlighten listeners while championing entrepreneurship and civic engagement.

His contribution extended beyond broadcasting, as he advocated for road safety, child protection and issues affecting Jamaicans living overseas.

His work with the Jamaican Diaspora earned him several accolades, including the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations’ Diaspora Ambassador in Media Award and the Team Jamaica Bickle Award for his service, journalism and commitment to Diaspora-related issues.

His work was also recognised by the City of Los Angeles and the Jamaica Awareness Association of California.

As host of The Jamaican Diaspora Live Online, Malcolm strengthened connections between Jamaicans at home and abroad, bringing community stories and shared experiences to audiences around the world.

PAJ President Dashan Hendricks described Malcolm as an embodiment of the best of Jamaican broadcasting and journalism.

“Dervan represented the very best of Jamaican broadcasting and journalism. He understood that journalism is not simply about reporting what is happening; it is about helping people understand the issues that shape their lives. His work with the Diaspora is particularly noteworthy,” Hendricks said.

“We will remember Dervan for his professionalism, warmth and commitment to public service, all of which earned him the respect of colleagues and audiences alike.”

The PAJ extended condolences to Malcolm’s family, friends, colleagues at the RJRGLEANER GROUP, and the many listeners and viewers whose lives he touched throughout his career.

“His voice may be silent, but his contribution to Jamaican journalism and public service will not be forgotten,” the association said.
