St Mary Municipal Corporation wants increased garbage collection as Christmas approaches

The Public Health and Sanitation Committee of the St Mary Municipal Corporation says it will be writing to the NEPM Waste Management Limited for increased garbage collection in the parish as the Christmas season approaches.
Speaking with JIS News at the Committee meeting on October 20, Chairman of the Committee and Councillor for the Oracabessa division, Ramon Henry, said the move is a proactive step in avoiding the events of last Christmas.
“There was a higher generation of garbage and garbage was all over the parish, and it took a longer time to clean it up, so based on that experience, we want to make better preparations or try to make recommendations to the relevant personnel to deal with it or put things in place so we don’t have the same problem this year,” Henry said.
He noted that the parish is already experiencing low garbage collection, and higher volumes of garbage during Christmas will exacerbate this problem.
“So, we want to write from now, being proactive, to try to get some form of increase in collection,” he said.
NEPM Waste Management Limited is the regional operating arm of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), which manages solid waste collection, treatment, and disposal for three parishes in northeastern Jamaica, namely St Ann, St Mary and Portland.
