Opposition Spokesman on Education, Damion Crawford, has filed a claim in the Constitutional Court seeking a declaration that the constitutional rights of Jamaican children to publicly funded tuition in public educational institutions at the pre-primary and primary levels have been breached. Crawford disclosed this during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

A body believed to be that of missing Clarendon policeman, Detective Corporal Sylvester Reid was discovered by police in York Town in the parish last night. Reid has been missing since April 14, and was last seen at his home in Evans Heights, May Pen, Clarendon. Police reports are that about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a team of police acting on information received from a suspect in the cop’s disappearance, led them to a foot track along the Parnassus main road in York Town where a body was seen in bushes off a dirt track.
Jamaica Evangelical Alliance condemns St James church shooting
The Jamaica Evangelical Alliance (JEA) is urging the culprit who shot 38-year-old Cora Thompson at the compound of the New Testament Church of God in St James last Wednesday to turn himself in to the police. In a statement, the church group declared that justice cannot be evaded indefinitely. “We strongly urge him to turn himself in to the nearest police station and submit to the rule of law. Beyond earthly justice, there is a higher accountability that no individual can escape,” it said.

Caribbean Cement annual output fell to five-year low
The kiln expansion at Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL) failed to lift output past one million tonnes in 2025 as production dipped below 2020 pandemic levels, according to data in its annual report. Going forward, operations could see “uncertainty” with higher input costs due to oil shocks caused by the US-Iran war, the annual report warns. Its kiln – the equivalent of an industrial furnace – was completed and commissioned in April–May 2025, after which Hurricane Melissa struck last October, causing temporary disruptions.
