Letter of the Day | Pursue principled pathways towards lasting peace

THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing in support of the Most Rev Leon Golding, the head of the Anglican Church in Jamaica, who has described recent US actions toward Cuba as “ungodly”. In a time of renewed geopolitical tension, it is imperative that faith leaders speak truth boldly with humility, uphold the dignity of all people, and urge restraint where policies threaten human flourishing.
The Church’s moral witness is grounded in the scriptures’ consistent calls to justice, mercy, and peace. Condemning policies that harm innocent civilians is not a partisan position but a compassionate one that aligns with the Gospel’s insistence that all people are created in God’s image and likeness. While we acknowledge the complexities of international relations, we cannot, and should not, ignore the human cost of sanctions and pressure that affect families, access to essential goods, and the right to a decent life.
We call on government leaders on all sides to pursue dialogue, humanitarian consideration, and principled pathways toward lasting peace. The Anglican Church in Jamaica, and its faithful, hopes for constructive engagement that respects human dignity, upholds international law, and favours policies that diminish suffering while promoting freedom and opportunity for Cubans and Americans alike.
May our nation, guided by justice, truth, and wisdom from above, intertwined with mercy and compassion, choose restraint over confrontation and open channels for renewed, principled conversation that leads to genuine reconciliation.
