Adopt protective, proactive approach to use DNA testing

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Despite the challenges, the potential of DNA testing to solve crimes, exonerate the innocent, convict the guilty and bring closure to families is immense. Jamaica can learn from countries that have used DNA evidence to solve cold cases that are decades old.

The path forward can be cleared by taking the following steps:

First, reject mandatory DNA testing at birth as unnecessary, disproportionate and inconsistent with children’s rights. Instead, let us use this as an opportunity to strengthen public awareness of existing legal remedies for disputed parentage.

As a nation, we must invest significantly in forensic DNA technology for crime-fighting. This requires training forensic personnel, building modern laboratories, and developing specialised expertise among law enforcement officers and supporting medical professionals.

We must also establish strong safeguards to protect privacy and prevent misuse, while increasing public education to build trust and cooperation.

DNA testing, when used responsibly, is a powerful tool that can make communities safer and reduce crime. Jamaica must accelerate investment in forensic science, not to intrude on the rights of children, but to protect the lives of all citizens.
