THE EDITOR, Madam:

The devastating boat tragedy on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has left families shattered and the nation asking painful questions about accountability, leadership, and the value placed on human life.

According to reports, the government-owned vessel was designed to carry around 90 passengers, yet questions have emerged over whether it was overloaded and whether proper safety procedures were followed. While dozens of passengers survived, many others lost their lives in what has become one of the country’s worst recent transport disasters. Every one of those lives mattered, and every grieving family deserves answers.

In moments like these, citizens expect their leaders to stand with them, not only in words but in action. Instead, many Zimbabweans have questioned why the nation’s leadership appeared focused on regional engagements while the country was still coming to terms with this heartbreaking tragedy. National disasters demand visible leadership, compassion, and decisive action.

In a nation blessed with vast mineral wealth, including gold, platinum, lithium, diamonds, and other natural resources, it is difficult for many citizens to understand why families who have lost loved ones are left with what they see as inadequate assistance for funeral expenses. It raises uncomfortable questions about national priorities and how public resources are managed.

For years, Zimbabweans have endured economic hardship while allegations of corruption and the misuse of public funds continue to dominate public discourse.

The Lake Kariba tragedy should be a turning point. A full, transparent, and independent investigation is needed to establish exactly what happened, whether safety regulations were ignored, and who should be held accountable. If negligence contributed to the loss of life, those responsible must face the consequences.

Leadership is measured by the protection and welfare of citizens. Zimbabweans deserve a government that prioritises safety, invests in public infrastructure, and manages national resources with integrity and accountability.

Many citizens have lost confidence in the current administration and believe that fundamental political change is necessary. Some argue that the president should resign and allow new leadership to restore public trust. Ultimately, any decision about political leadership should be made through Zimbabwe’s constitutional and democratic processes.

The people of Zimbabwe deserve competent governance, transparent leadership, and a government that places the lives and dignity of its citizens above politics and power. The victims of the Lake Kariba tragedy deserve justice, and their families deserve accountability.
