Letter of the Day | Let us elevate national discussions

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Recent national discussions highlight a troubling trend in our public discourse: the rise of unverified accusations and a rush towards extreme solutions. From claims of policy sabotage within the public sector to social media rumors about missing diplomatic courtesies, the standard of accountability for our national dialogue is under intense strain.

Elected officials must lead by example. True leadership requires verifying facts before broadcasting serious claims or targeting institutions. Leveling broad allegations without evidence erodes public confidence and dampens morale. When leaders react hastily to or mirror the behaviour of online blogs, it distorts reality and weakens governance.

Equally concerning is the sudden call to reintroduce outdated criminal penalties for defamation. Reversing decades of legal progress to weaponise criminal sanctions is a disproportionate response that threatens freedom of speech. Instead of suppressing speech through the courts, we must address the root problem of accountability in the digital space.

Misinformation is undeniably harmful, but managing it requires a balanced approach. Digital platform safety is a shared responsibility. It rests heavily on corporate tech entities to police their software, alongside independent bloggers who must adhere to ethics and basic truths.

We do not need a heavier hand or legal rollbacks. We need our elected leaders to elevate the discourse, ground their words in verified evidence, and demonstrate the transparency they expect from ordinary citizens.
