Letter of the Day | Dangerous motorcycle stunts should not be glorified

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to a segment on Television Jamaica’s programme ‘Intense’, aired on Saturday, October 24, which showed motorcycle riders performing daring stunts, some without wearing helmets. While such displays may be intended as entertainment, they raise serious concerns about road safety and compliance with the law.

Section 221(1) of Jamaica’s Road Traffic Regulations, 2022 requires motorcycle riders and passengers to wear properly fitted protective helmets. Section 274(3) further requires that helmets be securely fastened under the lower jaw. These are legal obligations, not optional safety precautions.

According to figures reported by the Island Traffic Authority, 273 people, including 76 motorcyclists, had lost their lives on Jamaica’s roads up to October 20. Those statistics are sobering.

Against that troubling background, particularly after the Heroes’ Day weekend, we must ensure that the presentation of such activities does not inadvertently encourage dangerous behaviour, especially among impressionable young people.

I recognise the important role of the media in informing and entertaining the public. However, that role also carries a responsibility to promote public safety. Greater care should be exercised in how potentially dangerous and unlawful activities are presented, ensuring that entertainment is balanced with appropriate safety messages.

Media houses should continue using their considerable influence to promote responsible road use, while urging the police to enforce the law consistently, and motorcyclists to place safety above excitement.
