The St Mary police are investigating the death of a man who was killed in a hit-and-run along the Heywood Hall main road on Tuesday night.

The incident took place about 9:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the Hampstead entrance in the parish.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, who is believed to have been of unsound mind, was walking along the roadway when he was struck by a motor vehicle.

“The driver reportedly failed to stop and left the injured man on the roadway. He was dressed in a light blue T-shirt and dark-coloured shorts,” disclosed Anthony Wallace, commanding officer for the St Mary Police Division.

He added: “The injured man was transported to the Port Maria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the police are appealing to anyone with information that may assist in identifying the vehicle involved or the driver to contact the Port Maria police.

In the meantime, the St Mary police are urging motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution while using the nation’s roadways.

“Motorists are reminded to remain alert, observe speed limits, and stop and render assistance in the event of a collision, while pedestrians are encouraged to use designated walkways where possible and remain vigilant when travelling along roadways,” Wallace said.
